When this house was built 35 years ago, a separate family room was a much-needed space for an active family.  But it created an awkward traffic pattern with the kitchen.  Our solution was to partially open a wall and change the traffic flow.  This now enables several people to work in the same space, and allows natural light to flood the family room through large windows in the kitchen, creating a highly functional and welcoming great room.
